PSP Fanboy: Game of 2007

PS Fanboy Best of 2007 award winners

The votes have been tabulated. It's time to find out which PSP games reigned supreme in a year where even DS fanboys couldn't doubt the awesome potential of the system. With a redesigned system, Sony recaptured the hearts of many with their portable, and there were tons of games to go along with the system refresh. Check out what the writers and readers of PSP Fanboy thought were the best games of the year.

Game of the Year
Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow

Does any game really harnass the power of the PSP as much as Logan's Shadow? The stellar graphics are accentuated by an interesting plot and some truly incredible music. What sells the game are the controls. They may appears overly complex at first, but the team at Sony Bend has somehow managed to create an experience that really works well on the PSP. You'll be performing head shots in no time.

The underwater battles of Logan's Shadow need special commendation. Why? They work so incredibly well, and we can't think of any game (portable or console) that does it as well as this one. Add the return of a fantastic multiplayer component, and you have a game that'll have you coming back for more.

Reader's Choice: Game of the Year
Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow (17% of votes)

Logan's Shadow took PSP Fanboy readers, held them at gunpoint, and made them love the game. The incredible variety in the game is quite impressive: not only will you be using a terrific cover system -- you'll be able to snap people's necks, stab them in the back and shoot explosive darts from your sniper rifle. It really is a lot of fun. Jeanne D'Arc takes second place in a year of many strong contenders.
Runner-up: Jeanne D'Arc (13%)

Best Graphics
SOCOM Tactical Strike

SOCOM Tactical Strike is the kind of game that puts most PS2 games to shame. The jungle scenes are among the most realistic environments we've seen in a PSP game. Massive cityscapes stretch for miles, and the PSP manages to let you run around freely in both outdoor and indoor environments without a single framerate drop. Slant Six conjured some kind of demon to squeeze so much tech into this game.

Reader's Choice: Best Graphics
Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow (29% of votes)
Did you see the water of Syphon Filter? It made us thirsty, and PSP Fanboy readers agreed. Our favorite moment in the game is when you're in a sinking sub -- water comes rushing in, and you see steam shooting everywhere. Absolutely gorgeous. Konami's Silent Hill Origins took second place, thanks to its impressive lighting engine.
Runner-up: Silent Hill Origins (15%)

Best Multiplayer
Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron

We describe it to our PS3 fans as PSP's version of Warhawk. If you love driving, flying and shooting, then chances are you fell in love with Renegade Squadron. Yes, the framerate is a bit questionable -- but the massive battlefields push the PSP system to its limits. The controls work incredibly well on the handheld, making it our pick for best multiplayer game on the PSP.

Reader's Choice: Best Multiplayer
Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron (20% of votes)
PSP Fanboy readers agree that Battlefront is a lot of fun. But, let's give a shout out to the fantastic Metal Gear community, which supported Konami's Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus to a near-win second place. As the only way to play Metal Gear online right now, we understand the love for this PSP-exclusive.
Runner-up: Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus (19%)

Best Original Soundtrack
Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow

You know you have something special when you throw in the UMD and hear Logan's Shadow's theme play for the first time. Then, you'll be surprised by the ethnic influences of the orchestral score from the very first level. The game plays like a big-budget action movie ... and sounds like one too. Grab some headphones, because no other portable gaming system is be able to deliver a soundtrack with this kind of fidelity.

Best Story
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions

Final Fantasy Tactics weaves a complex tale of political intrigue. Newcomers will be taken aback by the surprising maturity of the narrative, while seasoned vets will appreciate the Shakespearean remastering of the script. The new translation stands out as one of the most compelling pieces of game literature we've read this year -- on any platform.

Best Action/Adventure Game
Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow

Yes, it's a shooter -- but it's also a great stealth game. Logan has a number of fantastic tools at his disposal, and going for the more elegant approach makes Logan's Shadow that much more exciting. The variety of visors and rifles makes this that much more fun for the thinking man.

Best Shooter
Medal of Honor Heroes 2

The PSP isn't ideally suited for FPS controls, but EA Canada did a stellar job with Heroes 2. We were surprised by how intelligently paced this PSP FPS is, and how intuitive the controls are. In no time, you'll be ducking, peeking, shooting and throwing grenades, just like in any other modern FPS game.

Best Downloadable Game
Beats

The surprise release of Beats on the PS Store caught us off-guard. But, boy -- do we love this surprise. At only $5, this stylish downloadable has redefined the PSP experience for us. We're storing a lot more music on our Memory Sticks these days, just to play more Beats.

Best Driving Game
Burnout Dominator

It may be missing a few features, but Dominator successfully recreates the Burnout experience. With great graphics, even better controls, and downloadable content, Dominator really delivered a top-notch racing experience for handheld owners.

Best Fighting Game
Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Heroes

It may have won by default, but it deserves it nonetheless. Naruto not only looks sharp, it plays sharp as well. The lack of a worthwhile story mode makes this Heroes game fall short of its console brethren, but the Game Sharing feature is a nice addition that more PSP games should include in the future.

Best Puzzle Game
Crush

The only thing harder than Crush's final stages is finding the game. Sega did an awful job of promoting the game, but that doesn't change the fact that Crush is one of the most innovative titles of the year. Fantastic graphics and presentation only help cement the game's well-executed premise. Crushing two dimensions to three (and back again) changed the way we looked at the world for a very long time. Do not miss this game.

Best Music Game
Beats
Why play other people's music when you can jam on your own? This novel concept works beautifully on the PSP -- and with sexy skins and a fun music creation mode, Beats delivers a lot of game for very little money.

Best RPG
Brave Story: New Traveler

Once again, another great PSP game simply didn't get the attention it deserved. XSEED's fantastic RPG brings a traditional console-like role playing experience and makes it accessible to handheld gamers. A solid story with fantastic presentation makes this game a must for any fan of the genre.

Best Strategy Game
SOCOM Tactical Strike

If you don't think this game should win, it's probably because you haven't played it. SOCOM fans were shocked to see their beloved franchise so radically transformed and chose to ignore this iteration of the series. That's too bad. Each level requires true strategic thinking, where one wrong move can spell doom for your squad. Easily the most intense game on the platform, Tactical Strike will make you gain a newfound respect for the armed forces, and the tactics they must employ in the field. With over 20 hours of gameplay, the best graphics on the system, and knuckle-biting gameplay, this is one of the best games of the year.

Disappointment of the Year
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
We love Final Fantasy Tactics. Heck, it even won an award from us today. So, why does it get Disappointment of the Year? Because we wanted so much more from it. The game receives so many accolades for the quality of its gameplay -- that's undeniable. However, purely technical issues hinder the experience so much so that we've seen many people simply give up on the game. A game as great as FFT needed to be handled with a bit more love and care. We love the new translation and the new cutscenes -- but we're really disappointed by the lackluster framerate. Thankfully, Square Enix will make it all up to us with Crisis Core in March. Right?

And so concludes PSP Fanboy's Best of awards for 2007. And remember this: if you disagree with our choices, it's probably because there were too many games this year. Hopefully, this feature has reminded us, at the very least, that the "PSP has no games" argument is totally baseless. See you in the comments section!

[RS.com] Tom Clancy-Rainbow Six Vegas [PSP]

Image
After almost a decade on the PC and consoles, the Rainbow Six franchise has finally arrived on the PlayStation Portable with Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas. When the Xbox 360 version of Vegas arrived last year, it reinvigorated the franchise with thrilling gameplay and cutting-edge graphics. However, Ubisoft wisely realized it would be impossible to port that experience to the PSP. Instead, Ubisoft Quebec crafted an entirely new Rainbow Six Vegas custom-made for the platform. The result is an interesting, though short, tactical action game.

[RS.com] Fight Night Round 3 [PSP]

Image
EA Sports' boxing franchise makes its handheld debut with Fight Night Round 3 on the PSP. Rather than attempting to cram a full port of the PlayStation 2 version of the game onto the smaller format, EA Chicago has built an entirely different game, specific to the PSP. The incorporation of some of the better elements of the console versions of Round 2 and Round 3, along with the addition of some all-new features, makes the PSP version a competent boxing game that doesn't make too many sacrifices for the sake of portability. Unfortunately, the sacrifices that are made will be sorely obvious to fans of the series, and the resulting experience is somewhat disappointing

[RS.com] Scooby Doo Whos Watching Who? [PSP]

Image
This game has some good graphics. The game does have some glitches but that does not mess up the gameplay much. The game has three parts to it.Platforming, driving, running away from the bad guy,and cathing the bad guy.The story is great its like you are playing an scooby-doo episodes. The cut senes look like they sre well detailed and are in 3-d.The sound effect are not that good but the voice overs for every charater sounds like they came right from the tv show. There is not that much replay value the only thing that will make you come back to unlock sound tracks, concept art,and more. The level are based on which part of the story you are on.If you are the part of the story where you are in a haunted mansion then the levels will look like an haunted mansion. This game is not worth full price. You should rent it and give it a try if you like scooby-doo show.

Exausting DS vs. PSP battles...

Each system is great for itself. You can't rank them, they are two entirely different system, except for gaming. My vote goes to the DS.I like clamshell consoles more,it has a touch screen,it gives something new,not just button smashing, the DS is great for any sorts of games. But it's not only the functions that make the system,it's the games. The DS get's new games every day,the PSP doesn't,probably due to piracy,i mean not probably, that's the reason.Sony just releases the same console with just a few tweaks now and then. When Nintendo wan't to update a system they give out something entirelly new, like they did with the DSi.

The PSP is too big for a MP3 player, you can get those like five times it's size.Video player is ok,i guess, but the one thing i hate is conversion. If you have a movie that you wan't to convert, you have to wait for like an hour for it to finish, which is btw, annoying.I 'm not counting to the opportunities when you insert custom firmware, that something entirely different.

The DS on the other hand doesn't have any of the things the PSP does,it;s a basic gaming console like the Nintendo released before.Games on the DS are more fun then on the PSP.You can do so much more things when you have a touch screen.Of course the one thing the DS can't compare with the PSP are graphics.I played DBZ: Shin Budokai on the PSP.The graphics are like on the PS2,it's amazing.Such lighting moves, frame rate, models etc. the DS could never achieve that.Imo the best 3D fighter i've played on the DS is Naruto: Ninja Destiny, and it's not even good compared to the fighters on the PSP.

The PSP is like a handheld copy of a standard Playstation console. Is there anything better then playing a full 3D game while your traveling? Well, for some people there are better things, but for me there isn't.The DS can onsly stand for standard RPG's and stuff. The PSP also has bigger memory on it's UMD's which are 1,8GB,a game that big can last quite long, while most DS tittles get passed within a few weeks.I mean it's not up to the size of the game,it just indicates on how much can actually be stored on a disc.

Now,the PSP is slowly dying.Only Asia get's some games, and even that's rare. Many people said that piracy is like digging a hole,in which we will fall, which is entirely true.Downloading a pirated game means $50 less to the developers. The more games that get pirated the less money the developers get, which ultimatevly leads to extinction.Midway is about to go bankrupt due to piracy.Rockstar spent over $200K on a anti-piracy software for GTA IV.$200K wen't down the drain, just like that.I know i 've gone to an entirely different theme, but it's all somehow connected. This is only my oppinion, and everyone has a right of his own.

I also posted this comment on Janime's forum too, just in case you find it.

Chinatown is bigger then PSP GTA games

Chinatowns bigger then PSP GTA games

If you dream of INCREASED SIZE and LONGER SATISFACTION, there’s only one place to turn for your portable Grand Theft Auto thrills: and it’s not the PSP. Rockstar Leeds president Gordon Hall has told Nintendo Power that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be “far bigger” than any of the GTA games on the Sony handheld, despite that platform’s extra grunt.

Which is ideal, really, because Grand Theft Auto titles are all about playing in giant, sprawling cityscapes. Hall also believes the narcotics trafficking game could “stand alone on its own,” and promises “more odd jobs, deeper missions, and more moments of over-the-top action” than anything seen in other handheld entries in the franchise. Contrary to any fears that the DS would see a reduced GTA, Rockstar appears to be stretching hardware boundaries … again.

GameStop: Pre-order GTA: Chinatown Wars, get (in-game) guns and money

http://www.joystiq.com/media/2008/12/gta.chinatown.war.box.jpg

Forget gold-plated Lancers and exclusive costumes – GameStop is offering guns and cash to those who pre-order Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars in advance of its March 17 release. Of course, they aren’t real guns and the dough is, sadly, digital.

Pre-order the game and you’ll start out with every weapon and $100,000 in your tiny little polygonal pockets. GameStop hasn’t said exactly how this will work (if it’s a code, it would be on the internets a nanosecond later) but we’re figuring it’ll involve one of those newfangled voucher codes or some such. Or, you could play the game and get the satisfaction of earning – nay, achieving – something all by yourself. A novel concept, we know.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force 3

I’m so glad the PSP still get’s quality games like this. Every time a YGO! game comes out the whole gaming community freaks, especially on GameFAQ’s, no matter for what system the game is. This itme the PSP get’s it esclusively,a third installment of the Tag Force series. Now, what makes this game stand outMany things.

box Art [EUR]

Box Art

Basically, not many things have changed. You still have the semi free-roam,the partner system, same old places etc. And probably as seen in Tag Force 2 you have to strengthen the bond between you and you’re partner. The more hearts you fill up, the more events will pop-up. You start the game with 0 DP,so you have to fight to earn some.

Now,the most important question is, what has changed? First are the characters. You can fight up duelists from Season 3 and Season 4 - Dark Johan, Mr.T, Yubel, Supreme King…and the ones you had before. The dueling system. is same as before.Destiny Draw etc. you can choose from 3,501 cards to build up your deck.

As for the deck,it’s a average Warrior type deck, that can’t stand up to the updated decks of other duelists.AI has also been updated,so now you will break a sweat for some duelists to beat ‘em.

Technically,it’s all the same.If there weren’t the events, which are different for every character, this game would get boring for experianced duelists. We’ve been through the same in both Tag Force 2 and one.Dueling against new people is fun.Like as dueling Supreme King,or Trueman. It’s nice to see new characters.Other then that, Konami just packs the same game just with a few updates every year.Besides the Story Mode, you have the Free Duel, where you choose the opponent you wan’t to duel,Options,Database and other normal settings.

Ways to fill up your partners hearts:

  • Sandwiches - Well, this method mostly worked for TF2 and TF1.A Sandwhich costs 200DP.And unlike in TF2 ,you need to buy a dozen of sandiwiches for your partner to ”fill up”.Note: Golden Sandwich does not fill up a whole heart!
  • Dueling - As expected, duel with your partner as much as you can. That is probably one of the most efficient ways.

For duelins videos with the new as well the old characters go to Ashfire ‘06 channel, you can find the link on the right navigation bar.

And Trueman again...

And Trueman again...

Some characters models are untouched, while some like Jaden’s have been updated from Season 4.The event system is same as before, some backgrounds have been changed.

As for the Heart system…after you fill a heart,as said above,an event some up.

Jaden Events:

  • Event 1: Jaden remembers his time being the Supreme King. Duel: You vs. Supreme King
  • Event 2: Jaden remebers the duel with Yubel. Duel: You/Jaden vs. Yubel/Adrian
  • Event 3: Trueman comes! Duel: You/Jaden vs. Trueman/Trueman

There are four events for each character. The main goal of the game is to beat the Story Mode with every character you can partner wit.So basically it can entertain you for months,if it doesn’t get boring.

Besides cards from decks, and booster packs from 5D’s,there are also Synchro Monsters, mostly all of them.

Trueman drawing!

Trueman drawing!

Each characters loves a specific kind of food. For example, Jaden likes spicy foods,Lobesters,Ham Sandwiches,Dried Mackerel etc. while Chazz likes expensive top-gradesandwiches like Caviar,Stake and Top-Grade Salad.

There is also UMD recognition, where you insert TF2/TF1 in order to get Bastion Misawa as a duelist in the game.

To wrap this up…this is basically the same game just with a few updates that are nice to see, nothing else.If it’s your first time to play, then it’s loads of fun.To other who already played the previous parts it get’s a little boring.

Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi

Box Art

Box Art

The story goes as a comet falls on Earth, somewhere, and a little mushroom starts evolving into a walking, talking mushroom.Talk about evolution in seconds, huh…Anywho,at the very beginning of the game, you choose which Class you want to be:

  • Heavy
  • Sage
  • Scout

Story Mode goes the same for all three classes,it’s just each one has different attack, speed etc.You are a mushroom man in a mushroom village, when all of a sudden Mosquitos attack and start taking your food suplies,on which you must live on.Soit’s up to You to defeat those no-good duers.,must go through a tutorial level on how to battle, move and similiar stuff.

The whole system is very easy to use,you pick up new weapons,or old ones, from time to time and you can equip them.

A Mushroom in action!

A Mushroom in action!

Afterwards,a real level comes on with a main objective of killing the Mosquitos nest (a shue) as well as their master, big moquito with 180HP.This game is a standard 3D Platformer, more fun then the other mainly because of the system the game works on as well as the idea of mushrooms as main characters. After you beat the mother mosquito you head down to the Beetle Caves, where you are supposed to do the same thing. Now,this game doesn’t get boring, only if you pass it.Each level is different then the last one,you get new weapons using which you can combine into one more powerful, the story develops as you pass the game.

Honestly,i haven’t passed too much of the game, but i will. And my opinion won’t change no matter what this game shows later on.

If something really amazing shows up,i’ll update, otherwise no.

Graphics: 8/10

Sound: 8/10

Gameplay: 9/10

Overall: 8.5/10

This is a jewel in the thousands of DS games, one of them, and should not be passed if you have the cahnce to get it.Besides being very funny,it’ll give you hours of entertainment.

DC vs MK - AusGamerr

Classic DC characters such as Batman and Superman face off against the fighting game genre’s notoriously violent Kombatants, Sub-Zero and Scorpion (among others) of Mortal Kombat fame in the first ever cross-over between Midway’s MK series and the DC Universe. Is this just a cheesy attempt at making some cash? Or is there a good fighting game to be found upon investigation? Read our preview to find out…

Forget all the Mortal Kombat games post MKII. Seriously, you’re wasting your time. It doesn’t matter how much Midway and series creator, Ed Boon (that “Toastie” guy), attempted to flesh out their world, the original 2D face-off arcade classics, Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II, are the series’ highlights.

It’s with great pride then I tell you the latest MK entrant goes right back to its roots, and then some. All the classic characters are back, and while it is a 3D game, it fundamentally plays and feels 2D, which in the case of Mortal Kombat, isn’t a bad thing at all. Oh, and there’s some Bat-guy in there as well.

Tekken, Virtua Fighter and Soul Calibur were all great games when they first arrived, but nothing electrified the fighting game genre like the war between Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II. Like the playground (and street) arguments of Sega vs Nintendo, SFII vs MK had friends divided, schools divided and arcades divided. Knowing how to perform the secret moves for both games immediately made you a God when playing either; your massive crowd would look on in awe wondering if you were still on your original $1. But it was the gut-spewing, spine-ripping, shoulder-popping, wondrously decapitating Mortal Kombat that grabbed me most.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved Street Fighter, but because of its graphic nature, Mortal Kombat just seemed like the bad-boy of the two, the anti-hero if you will and it was through its blood-drenched ways it became the mainstay series it is today.

Yet despite this, Street Fighter was always more popular, and that series seemed to pull away even more with the advent (and introduction of) Marvel vs Capcom (a spin-off that has essentially become a genre unto itself). Having Hulk, Spider-Man and Wolverine in the same game as Ken, Ryu and Guile was just too cool to overlook, and all of a sudden the bad-boy of the group just seemed old and boring.

However, like some blood-curdling phoenix from its own ashes, Mortal Kombat has risen again, and this time they have their own friends along for the ride.

This year seems to be DC’s year: Dark Knight killed it at the Box Office, The Watchmen will arrive very shortly to the silver screen, DC Universe Online is digging its heels into the MMO market and now they’ve equally teamed up with the Mortal Kombat crew. Will this guarantee success for the title? Possibly. But the consensus so far seems to be one of confusion – after all, how can you have Superman in a beat-‘em-up? He’s strong enough to kill everyone right?

It’s the same argument that has seen one too many people question Darth Vadar and Yoda’s presence in the latest Soul Calibur, but the answer for both is the same - it’s a fighting game. Lighten up.

That said, don’t expect characters to simply be pounding on each other. Each DC hero and Mortal Kombatant will bring special skills, moves and abilities to the fray, and the few rounds I took the game with revealed a system that appears to be pretty well-balanced overall.

As mentioned in my intro, while fully 3D, the overall fight structure is much closer to the classic 2D games. This works pretty well as there are two new additions: one being a close-up boxing style form of fighting (aptly named Klose Kombat) where you can lean in or out (to attack or avoid) and block or punch. Being the person who combos it correctly will obviously garner you more hit points on your opponent and subsequently drain their life bar that little bit more. The other is expanded fighting beyond the immediate environment but with a twist called Free-fall Kombat. Now you can rush an enemy through a wall, which will then send you and said foe hurtling. While falling though, you’ll still be able to attack, and getting the upper hand here helps all the more as the person who builds their “super bar” first will end the sequence with a character-specific power move. It’s exciting, interactive and dynamic, and it works really well.

For you crazy people who need a plot for this type of game, you’ll be happy to hear comic book writers, Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, have been brought on board to craft a palatable plot that works. For the rest of us who don’t care and just want our favourites pummeling each other, the list of known characters thus far is (From DC): Batman, Superman, Wonderwoman, Catwoman, The Flash, The Joker, Green Lantern and Shazam. (From Mortal Kombat): Kitana, Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Jax, Shang Tsung and Sonya Blade. There are more to be revealed, and it’s a safe bet there’ll also be hidden, unlockable characters unrevealed until the game is released, but this list – as it stands – should suffice.

So it all sounds pretty good then, right? Well, I did leave the bad news till last, and unfortunately it pretty much negates my gushing over the series in the first place. For the sake of including the Warner Bros. owned DC license, there’ll be no gore in the final version. This means no gory fatalities, no ripping off of people’s heads and so, for all intents and purposes, it all might as well end up being finishes like Babalities and Friendship.

It’s true working with DC will propel the series further into the mainstream, and it’s not the first time Mortal Kombat has taken a blow for the worst (does the name Paul Anderson ring a bell anyone?), but with such a solid fighting mechanic back in place and less of a focus on bullshit mini-games and side-quests, it felt like MK had finally come home. You can definitely beat the pants off your opponent with their faces bruising and costumes becoming torn and tattered, but it feels like posturing to me.

Mortal Kombat is about gore! – it’s the bloodless MKII on SNES argument all over again. :(

Still despite that, I can honestly say the game really surprised me. It was fun to play, easy to pick up and immediately felt familiar. And can anyone really complain when you can face Batman off against Sub-Zero? I didn’t think so. For more related media, check out our AusGamers Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe game page.
